❓ FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Everything you might want to know about how this works.

How does the recommendation engine work?

You answer six quick questions about your current mood, energy level, who you're watching with, and what kind of experience you're looking for. We send those answers to an AI model that's been given detailed knowledge of thousands of movies and TV shows, and it returns four picks specifically chosen for your exact combination of answers. It's not a generic 'top 10' list — the recommendations change based on your mood.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free. No account required, no email needed, no credit card. Just answer the questions and get your picks.

What streaming services do you cover?

Our recommendations span all major platforms: Netflix, Hulu, Max, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+, and more. We try to flag which service each pick is on so you're not chasing something you don't have access to.

Do you recommend movies or TV shows?

Both. Depending on your answers, you might get a mix of films and series, or mostly one or the other. If you specifically want movies or just TV, mention it in the 'anything else' field at the end of the quiz.

How often do the recommendations change?

Every time you take the quiz, the recommendations are generated fresh. The same mood answers won't always produce the same list — the model draws from a wide pool and varies its picks. If you don't love the first set, try again.

How is this different from just asking ChatGPT or another AI?

The questions we ask are specifically designed to extract the information that leads to better recommendations — your energy level, your emotional state, who you're with, whether you want something easy or something that challenges you. A general AI prompt usually skips that nuance. We've also tuned the system specifically for entertainment recommendations, so it tends to give more specific and opinionated results than a generic AI response.

What's the blog for?

Every Friday we publish a Weekend Picks post with three hand-selected recommendations for the weekend. We also publish Mood Guides — deeper dives into what to watch for a specific emotional state, like when you're anxious, in a rut, or waiting on something big. The blog is for people who want editorial picks, not just algorithm results.

How do you pick the blog recommendations?

We look at what's currently available on major streaming platforms, what's new worth watching, and what's underrated enough that people might have missed it. We try to mix obvious picks with things you might not have considered, and we're always honest about who each pick is and isn't for.

Can I request a specific mood or topic for a Mood Guide?

Yes — send a note to hello@whatshowtowatch.com. We can't promise we'll cover every request but we do read them and they genuinely influence what we write about.

Who runs this site?

WhatShowToWatch.com is an independent site. We're not affiliated with any streaming service, studio, or distributor. Nobody pays us to recommend specific shows — we just try to give good advice.

Do you have affiliate links?

Some links on the blog point to streaming services through affiliate programs, which means we may earn a small commission if you sign up through a link. This doesn't affect which shows we recommend — we'd never push a show just because of an affiliate relationship. Our recommendations are based on quality and mood fit, full stop.
