We're in the thick of it now — the part of summer where the novelty has worn off and you've settled into the rhythm. Good time for good television. Here's what we'd watch this weekend.
The One That Earns Every Minute
Slow Horses (Apple TV+)
If there's one show we'd recommend to anyone regardless of their usual taste, it's this one. British spy thriller about the rejects and failures of MI5, led by Gary Oldman doing the performance of his career. Fast, funny, tense, and surprisingly moving. Four seasons available, all of them excellent, none of them with a bad episode. Start Friday night and you'll be done by Sunday.
Best for: Truly anyone. This is the rare show that works for people who don't usually like spy thrillers.
The Comfort Pick
Ted Lasso (Apple TV+)
An American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team he knows nothing about. The premise sounds thin. The show is one of the warmest and most emotionally intelligent things television has produced in years. Season 1 is perfect. If you've already seen it — rewatch it. Some shows are worth that.
Best for: Any group, any mood, you want to feel good about people.
The Late Night Pick
Dark (Netflix)
German sci-fi thriller about a small town where children start disappearing and time travel complicates everything. Three seasons, intricate plotting, genuinely unsettling atmosphere. Requires attention — you cannot have your phone out — but rewards it completely. The kind of show you finish and immediately need to talk to someone about.
Skip it if: You want something easy. This is homework in the best possible way.
