What to Watch When You Can't Sleep

It's late, your brain won't stop, and you've given up on sleep for now. Here's what to put on that won't make things worse.

It's midnight or later. You've been lying there for an hour and sleep isn't coming. You've made your peace with it — you're getting up, you're going to watch something, and you'd like it to not be a mistake.

The wrong choice at midnight spirals into 3am. The right choice actually helps your nervous system wind down enough to try again in an hour.

The Rules for Late Night Viewing

No thrillers with unresolved cliffhangers — you will think about them at 3am. No true crime — your brain does not need more threat signals at this hour. No shows that are so good you'll watch four more episodes when you meant to watch one. What you want: something genuinely absorbing but with a natural stopping point, and a tone that doesn't spike your adrenaline.

The Picks

The Repair Shop (Netflix)

A group of skilled craftspeople restore precious heirlooms — clocks, toys, instruments, furniture — for their owners. There is no drama. There is no conflict. Things come in broken and leave whole. The pacing is gentle and the craftsmanship is extraordinary. It's almost pharmacological. One episode, then try again.

Our Planet (Netflix)

David Attenborough narrating stunning wildlife footage. The visuals are beautiful enough to hold your attention, the narration is soothing, and there's nothing to track or remember. One of the best late-night watches in existence. Skip the episodes about climate change if tonight isn't the night for that.

Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (Netflix)

A tiny after-hours restaurant in Tokyo. Each episode tells one customer's story. Quiet, warm, 25 minutes long. The pacing alone will slow your heart rate. Perfect for 1am.

Detectorists (Acorn TV / YouTube)

Two men with metal detectors looking for buried treasure and mostly finding bottle caps. Slow, funny, deeply human. The show is so unhurried it feels like a meditation. Free on YouTube.

What Will Keep You Up Until 4am

  • Anything with a cliffhanger ending
  • True crime (any of it)
  • The next episode of whatever prestige drama you're currently addicted to
  • Doomscrolling instead of watching anything (obviously)
